CHET BAKER in "COOL TRUMPET" a.k.a. "TROMBA FREDDA" ∽ Italy, 1963

Although this video is already at UA-cam, it's in the wrong formate. I've smoothened the sound here and there, and changed the formate to wide screen. Now, it's Chet as he looked like in 1963. ∽ Enjoy!

Stan Getz Septet with JATP in Berlin, 1960 ∽ THE HOT BLUE C-JAM SQUIRREL
Переглядів 2,9 тис.13 років тому
We are "celebrating" the 50th anniversary of the "Berlin Wall" which was erected by the German communists on August 13, 1961. This lengthy, and quite chaotic jam blues mess is dedicated to the people of Berlin. ∽∽ Jazz is freedom, also the freedom of, err, screwing the blues. The whole 14:28-minutes thing is quite unorganized, as it can happen at such informal, unrehearsed summit meetings of ja...
Stan Kenton & His Orchestra ∽ PAINTED RHYTHM ∽ 1945
Переглядів 7 тис.13 років тому
One of the very first tunes of Stan Kenton I ever heard. ∽∽ It's been presented on radio by a collector who played the original shellack; I have taped the complete broadcast in the early 1980's, and later found the original 10" LP from where I have taken this track. The great Vido Musso plays one of his fabulous vibrant tenor solos, Jimmy Simms does a brief interlude on trombone, and Stan Kento...

Have you ever heard the Herman Herd with this wonderful chart? No? Now, here's your rare chance! Composer/ arranger Phil Moore's "125th Street Prophet" unfortunately has never been waxed commercially. It was only available on V-Disc in the mid-1940's, 'cause the version you can hear here has first been issued in 1979. Maybe I will post the V-Disc version from August 22, 1945 later on. Till then...

Once again hard times for yet another one of Hollywood's leading men: Robert Taylor, who has to deal not only with a conspiracy, a very fat, and sweaty Charles Laughton, and the completely vicious Vincent Price, but also with super-sultry Ava Gardner. Will he get her? I won't tell ya! Just go for the movie: www.imdb.com/title/tt0041207/ Eileen Wilson's dubbing is again splendid, and Nacio Herb ...

Okay, admitted: This has almost nothing to do with jazz, and it's very sentimental, if not rather syrupy. ∽ Anyway, Deborah Kerr's glances tell you everything about beauty, and real love; and Ava Gardner's looks are just gorgeous. Mr. Gable surely had a hard time to choose between the two. If you've watched this outstanding, though almost forgotten film, you will know that he took the ... Ah, I...

It's all in the video, respectively in the soundtrack; each musician will be introduced right at the start of his solo. Just listen, and have fun! By the way: Due to at least three 12" discs à 78 rpm, the pitch has changed every four minutes; I have edited that, and so, it's only 12:25 minutes here instead of the 12:57 minutes on the LP. These two rare tracks with Artie Shaw & His Orchestra are the perfect introduction to the man and his music: "Nightmare", Artie's significant theme song, performed on the air on April 2, 1939; and "Sweet Sue", but the not-so-famous version from November 4, 1939. I've of course transferred both tracks from two LP's (old vinyl discs). Now, which cover will win? I hope it's the yellow one. (It *is...

    "featuring the first electric guitar recordings..." Electric guitar recordings begin in 1933 and include e.g. "Blue Guitars" by Zeke Campbell and "Dipsomania" by Len Fillis, both recorded before Eddie Durham recorded anything on electric guitar. (Durham said himself "Hittin' The Bottle" wasn't electric, but acoustic resonator.)

    To Al Gray, Nice to read your comment. I'm a great admirer of your father's work. He wrote great tunes and arrangements for Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller. A String of Pearls is my favorite, and maybe one of the best big bands arrangements ever written. From the introduction with the screaming brass, moving to the smooth interlude played by the piano, bass and guitar together, to the main theme divided in two series of harmonic and different riffs, the main played by the alto saxes and the intervals played by the tenors, I just love it ! Passage Interdit is also a great tune, one of the many that makes you feel that Jazz arranging and sounds were naturally slipping from Swing to Bop. Great work done by a great man. Thanx.

    "Bird" was a very good movie, although it dwelt too much on his addiction and other problems and not enough on his music. But there's still time for Eastwood or someone else to make "Bird Lives!" about the development of his musical genius.

    The original key of "All Of Me" (1931) is B-flat a.k.a. B-Dur (Bb). "C" is for vocalists. Ab is for the ones who prefer a warmer sound, like all the cool cats who play "All Of Me" in this key.

  • @colourfulwithaU
    @colourfulwithaU 11 років тому

    The standard key for All of Me is C major...it can be transposed wherever, it really depends who's playing and what they're comfortable with. I tranpose tunes on different gigs depending on who's playing horn/s and/or singing. Always consider range and the idioms of the instrument...don't be a purist...

    • @KaRidder234
      @KaRidder234 Рік тому

      Most instrumentalists, the "cool" ones in particular - Lee Konitz, Lennie Tristano or Warne Marsh -, play it in Ab. It's just warmer and sounds nicer. Of course, when you are a vocalist, you have to find "your" key.

    Yes, Bird loved music at any time. And I think he plays very inspired at this particular date. This small band setting without bass, similar to the famous Benny Goodman Trio, or the highly praised Nat "King" Cole/ Lester "Pres" Young/ Buddy Rich Trio, was a great challenge for Charlie Parker. His lines are sounding like composed on the spot. He's so relaxed here. I wish there would be more.

  • @davidfletcher7573

    Many of the Glen Island broadcasts were superbly caught in on-line transcriptions by NBC, who carried the band on their remotes. RCA originally issued the LPs in the early 60s, tweaking the sound a little with stereo ambience. The 50s and 60s were a golden age for Miller LP reissues by RCA. The same LP also has a terrific Miller chart of "Hold Tight," featuring Marion Hutton.

    • @KaRidder234
      @KaRidder234 Рік тому

      Yeah, it was one of those annoying side effects of stereo, that they tried to enhance every great mono recording (which wouldn't have needed any "enhancement" at all) by means of electronic reverb and/or stereo.
